Local SEO for service businesses: what actually moves the needle
The short list of things that change your ranking in the map pack, and the long list of things that mostly do not.
Local search rewards a small number of unglamorous things. Most of what gets sold as local SEO sits outside them.
The business profile is the product
For local service searches, your Google Business Profile often matters more than your website. Complete every field, pick categories precisely rather than broadly, define your service area honestly, and keep hours accurate, including holidays. An incorrect "closed" on a Saturday costs you the whole day's searches.
Reviews, steadily
A steady trickle of recent reviews beats a burst two years ago. Volume, recency and replies all read as signals of an active business. Reply to the bad ones calmly and in public; that reply is read by far more prospects than the complaint.
One page per service, per area you genuinely serve
A single "Services" page listing eleven things ranks for none of them. A page about one service, written for one area, with real detail and real photos, can rank for a phrase that converts. Do not spin out fifty near-identical pages for suburbs you have never worked in. That is the version of this tactic that gets penalised.
Consistent details everywhere
Name, address and phone number identical across your site, your profile and the directories that already list you. Old addresses and dead phone numbers on forgotten listings do real damage.
Speed and mobile
Covered elsewhere, but it applies here too: slow mobile pages lose rankings and lose the visitors who do arrive.
What matters less than you are told
- Bulk directory submissions to sites nobody uses.
- Keyword density and other page-level tinkering.
- Blog posts written for search engines rather than customers.
- Any service that promises a specific rank position by a specific date.
How to measure it
Not rankings, but calls and form fills from organic and from your profile. Rankings move for reasons you cannot see; booked jobs do not lie. If your reporting cannot tell you which channel produced a booking, fix that before you spend anything on SEO.
